The mandatory once-a-year post

“Jenny, you’ve not posted anything to your blog in a long time.”

These words were randomly uttered by Juulia after we finished revising for tomorrow’s exam. Apparently she thought it was time for a random update. However, I had absolutely no idea what to write, so I asked her “And write about what exactly?” to which she replied “Your life… how this is your last proper year in Tartu, that you’re moving back to Finland…” (to be honest I can’t remember all of her suggestions, but yes… a lot has happened and a lot is about to happen!)

Let’s start with some of the things that have happened:

  • I spent the summer in Perugia, Italy
    • It was hot and sunny
    • I successfully placed an IV catheter on a flea-ridden pregnant street cat
    • I saw many interesting surgeries; exploratory sternotomy in a cat, SCC removal in a cat, GDV surgery in a dog, surgery to fix entropion in a dog, and so many more!
    • I shared an apartment with 3 Italian students, two of whom worked at a local pizzeria! How utterly Italian 😛
  • I got to visit the Isle of Wight with Jason and his parents in August-September
    • Jason proposed! Yes, would you believe it, I’m engaged!
    • We saw alpacas, goats, tigers, lions, dinosaur fossils, donkeys ( ❤ ), and a random peacock
  • Later I went on a quick England-holiday when I got to attend the wedding of Jason’s uncle
  • Life in Tartu has been hectic as ever
    • some of our more life-draining courses include Food production hygiene, Safety and quality of meat and meat products (or something like that), a course on EU legislation… very fun indeed!
    • on the topic of hygiene… Let me tell you  short story about how my recent experience at the doctor’s office went down (skip to the next point if you wish to skip my rather shitty story… literally shitty 😛 ) :
      • So we are going to have a practical period of two weeks at a slaughterhouse in the spring. Before this practical we have to aquire a health certificate. Now, you would expect that a simple blood test and health status questionnaire would suffice, but not in this case.
      • We had to bring a stool sample! That’s a freaking piece of my own poop I had to carry around in a 0,25€ plastic container!
      • Okay, I agree, it’s not all that bad, but having to say the words “I have a stool sample with me” at least 5 times during the visit was not something I would wish on anyone…
      • One last comment: pooping in a jar is not easy and my body does not perform well under pressure… No further comments!
  • I’ve become even more of a crazy dog lady!
    • Falo was entered into 5 dog shows this autumn
    • He became Estonian Junior Champion in Tartu 3.11.2019
    • We’ve made huge progress on the agility frontier
      • jumps, dog walk, see-saw, A-frame, tunnel and hoop = obstacles we’ve learned
  • My knitting obsession has spiralled out of control…
    • no further comments on that one either…
  • There has been a lot of general panic regardin the future, which brings me to all of the things that will be happening over the coming months!

Future things:

  • We will be leaving our lovely Tartu apartment behind in February
    • moving out is not something either one of us (me and Juulia)are looking forward to (mainly because of the sheer amount of stuff we have to pack up!)
  • A lot of practical training places have been sorted out, and now the stressing over those has begun
    • veterinary surveillance, slaughterhouse, 4 weeks of production animal medicine, and at least 5 days with a county vet in Finland
  • Next summer (summer 2020) I should be allowed to work as a veterinarian in Finland!
    • O-M-G
    • please keep your pets safe
    • panic mode has been activated
    • (I have no idea where I’ll actually work yet, but I’m slowly trying to figure things out and a few visits/interviews have been planned)
  • Jason will be coming to Finland for 3 weeks in March-April
    • and we’ll get his residence permit applications started up again – hopefully second time’s the charm 🙂
    • we will get started on re-doing my parents’ old house and hopefully get to move in within 2020 🙂
  • However, before all this I have a gazillion exams to get through before Christmas!

I think that’s most of the things Juulia was suggesting I’d write about. I really should try to post stuff more regularly, but my lazy tendencies can’t be helped 😉
